“Oh Wow, this is crazy!”
Those were the very first words that flew out of my best friend’s mouth when the little stick that she peed on showed the plus sign and believe me I got the 6 am call telling me she was PREGNANT!!!! We were so excited!
Lets talk about you! You’ve tested positive. You’re PREGNANT!!! Congratulations! A lot of expecting moms when they first find out that they are pregnant go through a range of emotions. Here's what you may feel... happy, sad, excited, scared, ambivalent, surprised, relief, bummed, etc. All of these different feelings are very normal. Trust me, your partner is or will be going through similar emotions. Not only will you feel like you’re on an emotional roller coaster but you will probably experience physical symptoms also. But remember you’re not alone. There are millions of other pregnant women out there going through what you are going through.

When will you "feel" pregnant?
Most women say they feel pregnant around 6 - 7 weeks. You may be wondering, how do they "feel" pregnant? Pregnancy comes with a goodie bag full of symptoms, good and bad, emotional and physical. You may experience a few symptoms or you may experience them all. So lets see if any of these physical symptoms sound familiar?
The Pregnancy Symptoms Check List:
- Fatigue and sleepiness. It takes a lot of energy to create a human being.
Morning sickness, nausea and/or vomiting. A lot of women experience morning sickness. Sorry to say but morning sickness doesn’t always show up in the morning. It can rear its ugly head all day long or even in the middle of the night. The good news is that most women get relief around the 2nd trimester. Be careful that you don’t get dehydrated. - Dizziness, feeling faint, and headaches.
- Breast changes: Fullness, tenderness, tingling of nipples, and darkened areolas.
- Aversions to some foods and odors. This is nature’s way of keeping you from foods or chemicals that can harm the baby.
- Metallic taste and/or increased salivation.
- Increased urination and thirst.
- Weight loss or weight gain.

- Difficulty sleeping.
- Food Cravings
Appointment tips. Things that need to get done!
- If you have not read tips for weeks 1 - 3, do!!!
- Get a good Prenatal multi-vitamin and mineral supplement and Prenatal Omega 3 DHA supplement ASAP! These are brands I like, click here.

- Ask your friends if they have any recommendations regarding a healthcare provider they like.
- Get up to speed on your health insurance coverage for prenatal visits, delivery, and the care of your child. Your baby will need his/ her own pediatrician once he/she is born. Be aware that not all insurances cover maternity care. And make sure that the doctor you choose to see takes your insurance. Find out what your deductible is because that is the amount of money you will have to pay out of pocket before the insurance kicks in. A little work ahead of time of time can save you thousands of dollars. Any doctor’s office will be happy to answer what they can or at least tell you the right questions to ask your insurer so you will get the answers you are looking for.
- Make an appointment with a health care provider such as an obstetrician or midwife now, most will want to see you by week 8 - 10. A doctor or midwife will see you before 8 weeks if you have a medical condition, have had problems with a pregnancy in the past, or are having symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain or severe nausea. If you're taking any medications or think you may have been exposed to a hazardous substance, ask to speak to the doctor or midwife as soon as possible!!! Insist if you have too!!

What if you do NOT have insurance?
You have a right to free and subsidized medical care. Prenatal care is extremely important. According to www.MaternityHealth.org about 2/3 of pregnant women need help paying for prenatal care. Find out what benefits you can receive from Medicaid. Benefits vary from state to state so also check with your State’s Health Department.
Ultra wellness tips for weeks 4 - 7:
Keep a peaceful home. A pregnancy body and the pregnancy mind need rest. Do not feel guilty about taking naps or resting. You need it and so does your baby!

STOP all risky behavior like smoking, breathing second hand smoke, drinking alcohol and using recreational drugs. Best-case scenario, you cut out coffee altogether. But if you’re having a hard time giving up the caffeine then limit yourself to no more then 2 cups a day. For more information check out my blog on Attention Moms!
